Knee Pain

The photo was to support a patient with medial knee pain. We used acupuncture to reduce pain and also included strengthening exercises into our treatment plan.

Knee pain is something that I unfortunately see a lot of. My approach is always to understand the cause and whilst using acupuncture to improve the flow of qi and eliminate pain, I also firmly believe patients should be supported with additional strengthening exercises so eliminate repeat flare up’s.

Knee pain can be caused by many factors, including:

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Running injuries

  • Ligament tears

  • Meniscus tear

  • Muscle pain

Acupuncture is effective in many of these situations as we are able to target the muscles and trigger points that are causing the pain. The fine needles inserted into very specific points are able to stimulate the body's natural healing response, reduce inflammation, improve blood flow, and promote muscle relaxation.

Several randomized controlled trials have been completed to study the effectiveness of acupuncture for knee pain. One such study focusing on patients with knee osteoarthritis concluded that ‘On the basis of the findings of the 10 randomized, controlled trials identified by this review, there is evidence that acupuncture is an effective treatment of pain and physical dysfunction associated with osteoarthritis of the knee.’
